Eighty years after Gabriela Mistral received the Nobel Prize, Chile is debating how best to honor her legacy

In Kibera, there is a mural that says “Sisi ni mashujaa” (“we are heroes,” in Swahili). Inspired by the Leso or Khanga—a type of fabric commonly used by women to dress or to carry their babies on their backs—it was painted as a tribute to the courage it takes just to live in that community.

Sometimes these dates may seem like just another excuse to fill the calendar with events, but at Maisha we believe they make sense if they help us pause for a moment and reflect on where international cooperation is heading—and, most importantly, where it is being built from.
